Line Array or Point Source? Matching the Sound System to Your Nairobi Venue
Ballroom, marquee, auditorium or open ground, the right speaker configuration differs. How our sound engineers choose for Kenyan venues.
Booking a bigger sound system rarely fixes bad audio. Coverage and room behaviour decide intelligibility, and Nairobi's venues behave very differently from each other.
This is how our engineers pick a configuration before quoting anything.
Point source for hotel ballrooms
Most Nairobi hotel ballrooms are wide, low-ceilinged rooms with hard surfaces. A pair of well-placed point-source tops with delayed fills covers them more evenly than a hung array squeezed under a low ceiling.
Where rigging points are unavailable, ground-stacked systems with careful angling avoid the front-row blast and back-row mud typical of over-driven rooms.
Line array for auditoriums and large halls
Long, deep rooms and tiered auditoriums are where a line array earns its cost: consistent level from row three to the back wall, with controlled vertical dispersion that keeps energy off the ceiling.
Arrays need certified rigging points and a load calculation, which the venue must confirm in writing.
Marquees and open ground
Canvas absorbs high frequencies and leaks everything else to the neighbours. Outdoors, distance and wind take over. Both cases need distributed delay stacks rather than one loud position at the stage.
For outdoor events we also plan for NEMA noise limits and evening wind shift, which changes coverage after sunset.
Speech is the hardest job
Corporate audio is mostly the spoken word, which is unforgiving. Microphone choice, gain structure and feedback control matter more than subwoofer count.
We allocate dedicated wireless channels per speaker type: lectern, handheld, lavalier for panels, plus spares held at the desk.
Ask for a coverage plan
Any serious supplier can show you a simple coverage sketch for your room before the event. Ask for it.
