Recycling Event Materials in Kenya: What Actually Gets Recycled
A practical look at which event materials Cara reuses, which get recycled, and how we keep corporate event waste out of landfill in Kenya.
Reuse first, recycle second — the order matters
Recycling is the fallback, not the goal. At Cara Event Management Company the first question on strike is always whether the item goes back into store for the next event.
Only what genuinely cannot be reused is separated for recycling, and we are specific about what that means in Kenya rather than making vague green claims.
What we reuse
Backdrop frames, stage decking, truss, exhibition booth frames, signage stands, cable, drapes, furniture, LED panels and fabric graphics with no client-specific dating on them.
What actually gets recycled in Kenya
Steel and aluminium offcuts have a genuine local market and are recycled reliably. Cardboard and clean paper are collected readily. PET bottles from delegate refreshment are separated at source when bins are labelled and staffed.
Plastic-coated banner material is the hard case — which is precisely why we design toward fabric and LED instead.
What we design out entirely
Single-use printed programmes, paper feedback cards, printed delegate lists, name tents and disposable water bottles are removed by design through the paperless delegate journey and bulk water stations.
Separation only works if it is staffed
Labelled bins alone achieve very little. We brief the strike crew, separate at the point of breakdown, and keep waste streams apart from the venue's mixed skip — otherwise everything ends up in the same place.
Can you provide a waste report after our event?
Yes — we report what was reused, what was separated for recycling and what went to general waste.
Is banner print recyclable in Kenya?
PVC banner is very difficult to recycle locally, which is why we push clients toward tensioned fabric and LED screens.
What happens to leftover event food?
Where the venue and food-safety rules allow, we coordinate donation of untouched surplus; better still, accurate RSVP numbers prevent the surplus.
Do you charge extra for waste separation?
No. It is part of how Cara delivers events, not an add-on line.
