Rigging and Load Limits: The Safety Questions Kenyan Venues Rarely Volunteer

Truss, hoists, rigging points and load calculations explained for organisers hanging screens, lighting and banners above an audience.

Anything suspended above people is a safety case, not a design choice. Many Kenyan venues have no documented rigging capacity, which means ground support is often the correct answer.

This is the process we follow before anything leaves the floor.

Ask for the venue's documentation

Request the rigging point drawing and the certified load per point in writing. If the venue cannot produce it, treat the ceiling as unavailable.

A verbal assurance from a banqueting manager is not a structural certificate.

Ground support as the default

Ground-supported truss towers and goalposts carry lighting, screens and banners without touching the roof. They need floor space and ballast, which is why the layout must account for them early.

For LED walls we prefer ground stacking with a rear support structure in most ballrooms.

Load maths, not eyeballing

Every fixture, panel and motor has a weight. The total, plus dynamic loading, must sit inside the rated capacity of the truss span and the hoists, with a safety factor.

Secondary safety bonds go on every hung fixture without exception.

People and process

Trained riggers, hard hats, an exclusion zone under the work, and no rigging over an occupied room. Load-in scheduling exists partly so overhead work finishes before guests or caterers enter.
